Returning to school or therapy after a break — whether it’s a holiday, summer vacation, illness, or family event — can be tough for kids. Changes in routine, even short ones, can throw off a child’s rhythm, especially if they have developmental, sensory, or emotional differences.
At Darling Pediatric Therapy, we often support families during these transitions. Here are a few strategies that can make the return smoother for everyone:

1. Reintroduce Structure Early
A few days before school or therapy resumes, start bringing back the routine. Set wake-up and mealtimes closer to the regular schedule, and talk about what’s coming up to reduce surprises.
2. Use Visual Schedules or Social Stories
Seeing what the day will look like can help ease anxiety. Social stories with simple pictures and reassuring language can remind your child what to expect and how they can succeed.
3. Keep It Positive
Frame the return as an exciting step forward. Remind your child of the friends, fun activities, or goals they’ll return to. You can even create a countdown calendar for younger kids.
4. Allow a Gentle Reentry
It’s normal for some hesitation to happen. If your child struggles with separation or shows resistance, stay calm and consistent. Reassure them that big feelings are okay — and temporary.
5. Connect with Your Therapy Team
Let us know if your child is having a hard time adjusting. We can offer strategies, adapt session plans, and provide extra support during the transition.
